Long Island House
Oyster Bay, NY

The clients' family was expanding, and most of their children were now having children of their own. The question was: how could they entice both their grown children and their young grandchildren to visit for weekends and longer stays? The answer was: use the basement space for a bathroom, three bedrooms, a small study area, and a playroom for the little ones. My client hired an architect to expand the front of the house by about 10 feet beyond the kitchen, and they made the basement a legal living space.
I reconfigured the old kitchen and designed the staircase along with the bedrooms, etc. The kitchen-banquette eating-area cantilevers above the stairs required some child-safety measures. Cable wires were designed into the open space above the kitchen and along one side of the staircase. Colorful carpet tiles were installed in the playroom, cerulean mosaic tiles in the bathroom, and each bedroom had a different motif.
